Europe faces potato shortage as climate extremes reduce yields
European potato producers are facing significant yield reductions due to extreme weather, including drought and high temperatures. Estimates suggest a shortage of approximately seven million tons of potatoes across the continent.
In Croatia, production has seen a notable decline, dropping from 174,000 tons in 2020 to 134,000 tons last year. While Croatia typically compensates for domestic shortages through imports, major suppliers such as Germany, France, and Belgium are also experiencing lower yields due to the same climatic conditions.
This supply deficit is expected to drive prices upward, with potential increases estimated between 30 and 50 percent. In Croatia, potato prices have already risen significantly compared to four years ago, moving from approximately 0.85 euros per kilogram to 1.28 euros. To mitigate damages, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced approximately 20 million euros in crisis funds to assist producers affected by recent weather events. Farmers are increasingly advocating for long-term investments in irrigation systems to combat future climate instability.
