Europe faces pressure to rearm amid shifting U.S. military role

Pressure from the Trump administration is driving European nations to increase defense spending and reduce their military dependence on the United States. While the U.S. has reviewed its troop presence in Europe, including a reduction of personnel at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania, Washington continues to utilize European military infrastructure for operations in the Middle East and beyond.

British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting has urged Europe to move out of a ‘defensive crouch,’ arguing that American frustration regarding European over-reliance on U.S. security may ultimately lead to a more capable Europe. Streeting dismissed claims that the U.S. is disengaging from the continent, noting that he has experienced the opposite despite ongoing reviews of American capabilities.

In the United Kingdom, the government is working to repair the alliance following tensions over military support for operations against Iran. A key challenge remains meeting NATO commitments, as Britain currently lacks a costed plan to reach the target of spending 3.5% of GDP on defense by 2030.
