Europe faces record heat stress and lowest river flows in 2026 summer

The EU's Copernicus climate monitoring service reports that the summer of 2026 was characterized by extreme weather events across Europe. It was the third warmest summer on record for the continent and the hottest ever recorded for Western Europe, with average temperatures in that region reaching 21.7 degrees Celsius.

Approximately 52% of the European landmass experienced 'very strong' heat stress, defined by perceived temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius or higher. This heat was accompanied by record or near-record sea surface temperatures in the surrounding oceans.

Simultaneously, the continent faced severe water scarcity. European river flows reached their lowest average discharge levels since records began in 1992. Major rivers, including the Rhine, Danube, Po, Loire, Rhône, and Seine, recorded record-low or near-record-low water levels during July and August. These conditions have placed significant pressure on irrigation, hydropower, and the cooling of nuclear reactors.
