The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has reported a record number of heat-related deaths in Germany, estimating approximately 15,800 fatalities through August 16. This figure surpasses previous records, including 14,000 deaths reported earlier in August and 9,500 in 2018.

A significant portion of these deaths occurred during a period of extreme heat between June 22 and June 28, when temperatures in some regions exceeded 41 degrees Celsius, accounting for 9,600 fatalities. Another 4,000 deaths were recorded during the high temperatures experienced in the first two weeks of August.

The most affected demographic includes individuals aged 75 and older. Experts note that the actual death toll may be higher than these conservative estimates, as heat is often not listed as the direct cause of death on certificates, frequently appearing instead as organ failure or complications from pre-existing cardiovascular, pulmonary, or renal conditions.

In Austria, the Vorarlberg region also saw a notable increase in mortality during heatwaves, with 79 deaths recorded in a single week in late June, which was significantly higher than the regional summer average.
