Europe faces strategic challenges in global space race

At the inaugural Space Forum, institutional leaders, scientists, and industry experts discussed Europe's need for increased autonomy and competitiveness in the space sector. While European space investment is growing, its relative share of the global public space budget has declined from 15% to 10% over the last four years.

Juan Carlos Cortés, Director of the Spanish Space Agency (AEE), identified the United States as the undisputed leader and China as the most dynamic actor. He noted that European fragmentation and governance issues remain significant obstacles to progress.

Despite these challenges, the forum highlighted existing strengths such as the Galileo navigation system and the Copernicus Earth observation program. Spain was specifically noted for its capacity to design, integrate, and operate complete satellite systems.
