Europe focuses on regional vitality and island energy transitions
The 2026 European Week of Regions and Cities, themed ‘Strong regions, strong Europe’, highlights the importance of small towns, villages, and remote communities to the continent's long-term prosperity. These areas are vital for food and energy production, natural resource management, and cultural preservation, yet they face challenges such as depopulation, shrinking services, and labor shortages.
To address these disparities, there is an emphasis on ‘rural proofing’ policies. This process ensures that policy-making accounts for the specific needs of sparsely populated areas to avoid unintended consequences that might occur if urban-centric models are applied to rural contexts.
Additionally, small islands are emerging as significant players in Europe’s energy transition. Due to their isolation and limited connection to mainland grids, islands serve as ideal testing grounds for renewable energy generation, storage, and smart demand management. Their manageable scale allows for the rapid implementation and evaluation of new technologies and governance models that can eventually be scaled to larger regions.
