European natural gas prices surge as reserves hit historic lows

European natural gas prices have surged by over 130% since the start of 2026, with Dutch TTF futures exceeding 65 euro/MWh on August 20. This price spike occurs as gas reserves reach historically low levels ahead of the winter heating season.

Several factors are contributing to the supply pressure. Record-breaking heatwaves and droughts have increased electricity demand for cooling while simultaneously reducing hydroelectric and nuclear power output. This has forced gas-fired power plants to compensate for the energy deficit, consuming gas that would otherwise be used to replenish winter stocks.

Additional supply constraints include extended maintenance shutdowns at Norwegian gas fields and the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz. As of August 1, European gas storage was only 57.1% full, the lowest level recorded for this period in available history. Daniel Kral, an economist at Oxford Economics, noted that unfavorable supply risks have materialized, leaving the region vulnerable to potential supply shocks during the upcoming cold season.
