Europe heatwaves cause over 30,000 excess deaths

Provisional data from the EuroMomo monitoring platform indicates that Europe has experienced over 32,000 excess deaths due to extreme heatwaves and drought this summer. The deadliest period occurred during the last week of June, which saw nearly 16,000 excess deaths, followed by the first week of July with approximately 8,000 deaths.

An analysis by AFP across eight specific countries—Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain—found a total of 33,000 excess deaths or deaths directly linked to the heat. In Germany, official figures reported approximately 14,000 heat-related deaths up until August 9. In Portugal, the Direção-Geral da Saúde recorded more than 600 excess deaths between mid-June and the end of July.

Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of these heatwaves to man-made climate change driven by the burning of fossil fuels.
