Europe increases Ukraine aid but remains reliant on US weapons
European nations significantly increased aid to Ukraine during May and June, providing a total of 11 billion euros. According to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy’s Ukraine Support Tracker, this funding was split between 3.4 billion euros for military equipment and 6.7 billion euros for financial and humanitarian assistance.
Despite the rise in European contributions, there remains a heavy reliance on United States-made weaponry. In the first half of 2026, European countries purchased at least 3 billion euros worth of arms from American companies, accounting for approximately 30% of the total military aid provided by Europe to Ukraine. This reliance is maintained through both direct purchases from US companies and deliveries from American military stockpiles.
A major component of the ongoing support is the new 90 billion euro Ukraine Support Loan package, designed to meet the country’s budgetary and defense needs through 2026 and 2027. Leading bilateral contributors include Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands for military aid, while the United Kingdom has provided the highest amount of financial and humanitarian support.
