In 2025, Europe installed 36 GWh of battery storage, raising cumulative capacity above 100 GWh and marking a 48 % year‑on‑year growth after a slowdown in 2024. For the 27 EU member states, 27 GWh were added, representing 75 % of the continent’s total. Large‑scale batteries supplied over half of the new capacity, with Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy leading the market, while Ukraine and Bulgaria rounded out the top five.
The Solar Power Europe report forecasts installations to exceed 50 GWh in 2026 and reach 138 GWh annually by 2030, with utility‑scale storage accounting for about two‑thirds of annual additions. Cumulative capacity could surpass 160 GWh in 2026 and 580 GWh by 2030.
Dutch startup Ore Energy has signed an agreement with utility Budget Thuis to deploy up to 1 GWh of iron‑air batteries—the largest European project of this technology. The first phase will deliver 400 MWh in 2028. Iron‑air cells can store electricity for 24‑100 hours (up to four days), focusing on low cost and long duration rather than energy density, and are intended to capture excess renewable generation for later grid use.
