Europe observes rise of 'islamogauchism' political trend

A commentary in the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) describes the growing alignment between radical left-wing extremists and Islamists in Europe, a phenomenon termed ‘islamogauchism’. This movement is characterized by shared anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist, and often anti-Zionist stances.

The collaboration manifests through cooperation in non-governmental organizations, anti-Israel activism, left-wing populist parties, and academic humanities departments. While some academic circles dismiss the term as a right-wing political label, the commentary argues it describes a reality where religious fundamentalists, communists, and Middle Eastern nationalists find common ground.

In Germany, this trend is linked to rising anti-Israel sentiments. The report cites the February 2024 brutal assault on Jewish student Lahava Shapira at Freie Universität Berlin as an example of the tensions present in student environments, noting that federal services and monitoring organizations have recorded an increase in such incidents between 2023 and 2025.
