Europe prepares for winter time transition amid health debates

As the end of October approaches, Serbia and much of Europe are preparing to transition to winter time. Although the European Union has engaged in long-standing debates regarding the abolition of seasonal clock changes, no final agreement has been reached, meaning the practice will continue for now.

Scientific research suggests that if seasonal changes were to be abolished, maintaining permanent winter time would be more beneficial for human health than permanent summer time. A study from the University of British Columbia, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, highlights that morning light is crucial for regulating the body's internal biological clock.

While permanent summer time offers more evening light, researchers warn that later sunrises can lead to shorter sleep duration, reduced productivity, and poorer academic performance. The primary issue identified is the impact of dark winter mornings on sleep quality and the natural circadian rhythm.
