Europe reaches renewable energy milestones as solar power leads transition

Europe has reached a significant milestone in renewable energy production, generating 398.8 TWh of renewable electricity in the first half of 2026. Solar power has emerged as a dominant force, becoming the continent's primary electricity source during June and July 2026. The rapid deployment of photovoltaic technology, which can be installed in approximately 18 months, has allowed solar energy to surpass both coal and gas production.

In France, the energy mix is 95.2% decarbonized through a combination of nuclear, solar, and wind power. The country recorded a net export of 51 TWh in the first six months of 2026, generating approximately 3 billion euros in revenue.

Regarding the future of nuclear energy, discussions are focusing on reducing dependence on natural uranium through fourth-generation fast neutron reactors. These reactors, which use liquid sodium as a coolant rather than water, have the potential to recycle depleted uranium and plutonium. While previously sidelined due to higher costs and political pressure, these technologies are being reconsidered as tools for energy sovereignty and optimized material use.
