Europe records hottest summer ever with extreme heat stress

The 2026 summer was the hottest ever recorded in Western Europe, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service. The extreme heat caused tens of thousands of excess deaths and was characterized by both intense temperatures and vast geographical coverage.

Data shows that 52% of Europeans were exposed to ‘very strong’ heat stress, with perceived temperatures exceeding 38°C. Approximately 80% of the continent experienced ‘strong’ heat stress with perceived temperatures above 32°C. During the season, there were 17 days where at least 60% of Western Europe recorded temperatures higher than 30°C.

Climate researcher Samantha Burgess noted that the heat was remarkable for its extent as well as its intensity. The most severe heatwaves were concentrated in France, the United Kingdom, and Belgium. While 2026 set records for Western Europe, the 2003 heatwave remains the most severe in terms of combined duration and intensity.
