European rivers hit record low water levels due to extreme drought

Major European rivers are experiencing historically low water levels due to extreme heat and prolonged hydrological drought. Data from the Copernicus Earth observation program indicates that during July, significant portions of the Rhine, Thames, Danube, Rhone, and Po rivers reached record lows.

Specific findings show that approximately 95% of the observed sections of the Thames and 85% of the Rhine recorded their lowest July discharge since 1992. Two-thirds of the Danube also reached record lows. In Italy, the Po river's flow dropped by about 40%, while in France, 43% of monitored small rivers had dry beds or interrupted flows by late July.

The Rhine has reached its lowest point since record-keeping began in 1880. These conditions pose severe risks to economic and ecological systems, including freight transport, hydroelectric power generation, agricultural irrigation, and the cooling of nuclear power plants. Experts warn of catastrophic impacts on ecosystems and wildlife habitats.
