Europe seeks digital independence from U.S. tech giants

Europe is actively seeking to reduce its reliance on American technology giants by developing domestic alternatives. However, achieving true digital sovereignty presents significant practical challenges.

A hypothetical removal of U.S. technology would impact nearly every aspect of daily life in Europe. Beyond hardware like iPhones, essential digital services would vanish, including Google Search, Google Maps, WhatsApp, and various social media platforms. Professional environments would lose tools such as Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Financial infrastructure is also deeply integrated with U.S. systems. Even when using European bank cards, transactions often rely on American networks like Visa and Mastercard. While open-source alternatives like Mastodon exist, their utility is limited by the widespread use of dominant U.S. platforms by the broader population.
