Europe seeks more icebreakers to strengthen Arctic presence

At the EU-Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, European Union diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the urgent need for more icebreakers to strengthen Europe's presence in the Arctic. She noted that climate change and the opening of new maritime corridors make it essential for the EU to possess vessels capable of navigating difficult conditions.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo advocated for EU funding to procure icebreakers, highlighting Finland's technical expertise in shipbuilding. This position was supported by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who stated that the issue is a challenge for the entire European continent, not just Nordic nations.

The push for increased Arctic capabilities comes as China, Russia, and the United States intensify their activities in the region to access natural resources made available by melting ice. While Russia maintains a large icebreaker fleet to utilize northern sea routes, the United States recently announced plans to purchase 11 icebreakers from Finland to modernize its Coast Guard.
