Europe seeks regulation of AI smart glasses over privacy concerns

European authorities and citizens are increasingly calling for regulations on AI-powered smart glasses following reports of the devices being used to covertly film women and girls. In Britain, a petition has been launched demanding a ban on their sale, fueled by concerns over privacy and reports that Meta may integrate facial recognition features into the hardware.

Meta, which produces smart spectacles in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, reported selling approximately seven million pairs in 2025. While the company states it has taken steps to prevent tampering with the LED recording indicator, critics remain concerned about misuse. In response to growing privacy fears, the city of Oslo has banned the use of smart glasses in schools while the Norwegian government considers broader regulations.
