Europe seeks to bridge gap between scientific research and market commercialization
Europe is facing critical challenges in bridging the gap between scientific research and market commercialization. Experts from the INPACT! network, comprising over 120 researchers from 20 countries, have published an analysis in the journal ‘Science’ highlighting that the current innovation funding system is too fragmented. They argue that the transition from laboratory discoveries to viable products is slowed by complex, multi-stage funding processes that require scientists to repeatedly seek separate grants for research, practical application testing, and technology development.
To address these inefficiencies, researchers suggest integrating different funding streams, such as placing ERC Proof of Concept grants under the management of the European Innovation Council (EIC). This would create a more fluid pathway for high-risk, early-stage technological projects.
In parallel, preparations are advancing for the 5th Central European Technology Forum (CETEF’26). The forum aims to serve as a strategic platform for debating European technological sovereignty, industrial reconstruction, and the integration of science with business. The event is gaining increased international relevance, with participation expanding beyond Central Europe to include partners from France, Germany, and the United States. Discussions are expected to focus on critical sectors including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, quantum technologies, photonics, and semiconductors.
