Europe sees surge in ceftriaxone‑resistant gonorrhea cases

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports a sharp rise in gonorrhea infections that are resistant to the first‑line antibiotic ceftriaxone. In 2024 the EU recorded more than 106,000 gonorrhoea cases – the highest number since surveillance began in 2009 – and a growing share of those infections failed treatment with ceftriaxone.

Countries with the most pronounced increases include France, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Health officials note that resistant strains are being introduced from regions with higher prevalence, such as Southeast Asia, and are now spreading locally within Europe. The ECDC warns that the growing resistance could limit treatment options and lead to serious complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and ectopic pregnancy, especially for people with multiple unprotected sexual partners.

While the overall risk to the European population remains low, the trend is described as a warning signal that must not be ignored, prompting calls for enhanced surveillance and alternative therapeutic strategies.
