Austria to launch Federal Office for Cybersecurity amid rising crime
Austria is launching a new Federal Office for Cybersecurity (BCS) on October 1 to centralize digital defense and coordinate responses to large-scale attacks. This move follows a significant rise in cybercrime; reported cases in Austria reached 63,459 in the previous year, compared to 13,104 a decade ago. Currently, authorities are able to solve only about one third of these cases.
The new agency will focus on protecting critical infrastructure, including energy, transport, and healthcare. Under new regulations, companies and institutions will be required to register with the office and are mandated to report cyber incidents. Failure to comply with these reporting requirements can result in fines of up to 100,000 euros.
