Europe battles record heatwaves, wildfires, and drought

Europe is facing a severe environmental crisis characterized by record-breaking heatwaves, widespread wildfires, and significant drought. A historically hot summer has contributed to an estimated 16,000 excess deaths across the continent during a single week in June 2026, with Germany, France, and Belgium among the hardest-hit nations.

Wildfires are ravaging multiple regions. In Belgium, a massive blaze in a nature reserve has grown to approximately 3,000 hectares, prompting evacuations near the German border. Greece has also struggled with multiple fires, including a significant incident on the island of Salamis that required the maritime evacuation of over 570 people. In Croatia, authorities have arrested four individuals suspected of arson.

Climate monitoring from Copernicus indicates that West Europe experienced its warmest June-July period on record. The extreme heat has also led to significant hydrological changes, with the Danube River reaching its lowest levels in 30 years and the Rhône glacier in Switzerland retreating by 50 meters or more. These conditions are being driven by human-induced climate change, which increases the frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events.
