Europe prepares for winter time transition on October 25
European countries are preparing for the transition from daylight saving time to winter time on the night of Saturday, October 24, to Sunday, October 25. During this change, clocks will be set back by one hour at 03:00, providing an extra hour of sleep but resulting in earlier darkness and shorter days.
While the change is harmonized across the European Union to prevent disruptions in transport and banking, the long-term future of seasonal time changes remains a subject of debate. Although the European Parliament supported a proposal in 2018 and 2019 to abolish the practice, EU member states have not yet reached a consensus on whether to maintain permanent summer or winter time. Consequently, the current system of biannual adjustments remains in effect.
Critics of the practice point to potential negative impacts on biological rhythms and sleep quality, while questioning whether the original goal of energy savings remains significant in the modern era.
