Europe warming at twice the global average rate

Experts identify four primary factors accelerating this phenomenon: changing weather patterns, proximity to the rapidly warming Arctic, reduced snow cover, and decreasing atmospheric pollution. The melting of Arctic ice creates a feedback loop where the darker ocean absorbs more heat instead of reflecting sunlight.

These shifts have led to more frequent and intense heatwaves. In June 2026, a severe heatwave occurred due to a stationary ‘heat dome,’ potentially linked to changes in the jet stream. These extreme temperatures have resulted in tens of thousands of heat-related deaths.
