Europe heating up twice as fast as global average

Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service show that Europe’s average temperature is rising about 0.56 °C per decade since the mid‑1990s, more than double the global average increase of roughly 0.27 °C per decade. This accelerated warming has already intensified heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, floods and strain on energy networks across the continent. Recent summer heatwaves in France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy brought temperatures near or above 40 °C, prompting red alerts, school closures and pressure on health systems. Scientists note that Europe’s landmass heats faster than the oceans and that parts of northern Europe are near the rapidly warming Arctic, amplifying the effect. The trend has also contributed to higher sea temperatures in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic, affecting marine ecosystems and fisheries.

The faster warming is linked to multiple factors, including reduced atmospheric aerosols, changing weather patterns and increased atmospheric pressure systems that trap heat. These changes elevate risks for agriculture, infrastructure and public health, making climate impacts an immediate concern for European societies.
