Europe wildfire areas could triple due to climate change, study warns
A study published in ‘Global Change Biology’ by researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) warns that climate change could significantly expand the area of vegetation fires in Europe by the end of the century.
Under a low-warming scenario of 1.8 degrees Celsius, the annual area affected by fires is projected to increase by approximately 39 percent. In a high-emissions scenario resulting in 3.6 degrees of warming, the burnt area could increase by 192 percent, nearly tripling current levels. The researchers note that hot, dry, and windy conditions are the primary drivers of this increased activity.
While climate change is a dominant factor, the study emphasizes that land use, prevention, and early detection are critical in determining the total fire area. Improved fire management and investment in prevention could moderate these increases by more than 70 percent, though they cannot replace the need for climate mitigation.
Additionally, forest composition plays a role in resilience; experts suggest that transitioning from pine monocultures to mixed deciduous forests, including oak, can help reduce fire intensity and improve forest stability.
