Europe wind energy capacity rises as recycling innovations emerge

Europe is experiencing a significant surge in wind energy capacity. According to WindEurope, the continent installed 8.8 GW of new capacity in the first half of 2026, marking a 30% increase compared to the same period last year. This new capacity is estimated to power approximately seven million European households and replace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 LNG tankers annually.

Germany led the installations with 3.4 GW, followed by the United Kingdom with 789 MW and Spain with 612 MW. WindEurope projects that Europe could reach a record 24 GW of new capacity by the end of 2026.

As capacity grows, the industry faces challenges regarding decommissioned equipment. While 90% of a turbine's mass consists of recyclable materials like steel and copper, the composite materials in blades are difficult to process. To address waste, companies like Vattenfall have collaborated with design studios such as Superuse to repurpose components. For example, a retired nacelle cover from an Austrian turbine has been transformed into a solar-powered tiny house equipped with a kitchen and bathroom.
