Europe winter forecast: El Niño to drive atypical snowfall patterns

The Super El Niño climate anomaly is expected to significantly influence the 2026-2027 winter season across Europe, altering traditional precipitation patterns. According to data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, there will be major regional discrepancies in weather conditions.

Heavy snowfall is projected to concentrate in high mountain regions, including the entire Alps range, Switzerland, and the French Alps. Central Europe is also expected to see above-average solid precipitation, particularly during February when cold fronts are predicted to intensify.

In contrast, northwestern and southern Europe are forecasted to experience a substantial deficit in snow. Climatologist Roxana Bojariu notes that while the polar vortex and El Niño could trigger specific cold spells and snowfall, these may be punctual episodes rather than a consistently cold winter throughout the entire season.
