European agencies advance interoperable military and emergency communications
European defense and security agencies are advancing initiatives to ensure seamless communication across borders and between different national systems. In Brussels, the French Agency for Operational Mobile Communications for Security and Emergency Services (ACMOSS) engaged with the European Commission and public safety operators regarding the development of the European Union Critical Communication System (EUCCS). ACMOSS presented France’s Réseau Radio du Futur (RRF) as a model for the EUCCS, emphasizing the need for a framework that recognizes existing national investments and supports interconnection.
Simultaneously, a new phase of the ESSOR military communications program has launched in Bonn. Led by the Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement (OCCAR) and the a4ESSOR industrial consortium, the program aims to allow different national radio systems to exchange tactical information without requiring identical hardware. This phase includes the development of the ESSOR Narrow Band Waveform (ENBWF), designed to facilitate interoperability among the militaries of France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland, and Poland. The initiative relies on software-defined radio technology to enable communication between equipment manufactured by different companies, such as Thales, Leonardo, and Rohde & Schwarz.
