European air quality ranking identifies high mortality risks in Polish cities

The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a ranking of 761 European cities based on the mortality risk associated with long-term exposure to three specific pollutants: fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ground-level ozone (O3).

In Poland, the results show significant disparities. Koszalin recorded the best air quality among the 68 Polish cities included, ranking 283rd. Conversely, Krakow ranked 748th, indicating a high mortality risk. Overall, 21 of the 68 Polish cities fell into the bottom 10th decile, meaning they performed worse than 90% of the cities surveyed.

On a broader European scale, Tallinn (8th), Helsinki (14th), and Stockholm (22nd) were among the cities with the most favorable air quality. At the lower end of the spectrum, Athens (750th), Bucharest (741st), Sofia (731st), Zagreb (725th), and Warsaw (697th) were identified as having some of the highest mortality risks due to air pollution.
