European airports invest in decarbonization and fuel infrastructure
Stuttgart Airport has secured a 44 million euro loan from the European Investment Bank to support decarbonization and infrastructure modernization. The airport plans total investments of up to 111 million euros, which include the acquisition of approximately 100 electric ground handling vehicles, new charging infrastructure, a workshop, and a new fire station.
Additionally, the airport will install systems to provide pre-heated or pre-cooled air to parked aircraft. This measure aims to eliminate the need for auxiliary engines to run while stationary, potentially reducing annual CO2 emissions by approximately 1,500 tons.
Düsseldorf Airport is also undertaking a one billion euro investment program. A key component is a new fuel terminal connected by rail to Rotterdam, scheduled to be operational by 2029. This rail link will allow aircraft fuel to be transported via freight trains, increasing supply security by reducing reliance on local refineries in Cologne and Duisburg. The connection is also expected to facilitate the transport of sustainable aviation fuel from Rotterdam, which is currently difficult to move economically by truck.
