European and British officials call for global AI regulation
During a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Jozef Sikela called for international cooperation to establish safety mechanisms for artificial intelligence. Sikela emphasized that because AI transcends borders, global action is necessary to manage risks and ensure the technology is used for the public good.
Bulgarian MEP Eva Maydell advocated for Europe to lead the global conversation on technology regulation, noting the need for capital and a unified market to enforce rules. She also proposed a permanent dialogue between European leaders and the tech community. Meanwhile, Maltese MEP Alex Agius Saliba warned that companies developing AI must not be allowed to self-regulate.
In the United Kingdom, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan stated that the country must not allow technological oligarchs to control AI. Comparing the current shift to the Industrial Revolution, Narayan argued that the state must build its own capacities and resources to manage the transition and ensure democracy maintains control over the technology.
