European annual leave variations: Lithuania and Italy compared

Annual leave durations vary significantly across Europe based on labor laws, profession, and personal circumstances. In Lithuania, the State Labour Inspectorate (VDI) notes that while all employees are entitled to paid leave, specific factors can extend this period.

Extended leave is granted to employees under 18, single parents raising children under 14, parents of children with disabilities under 18, and employees with disabilities. Additionally, those in high-stress roles—such as teachers, healthcare workers, and social workers—or those working in hazardous conditions may receive extra rest to maintain health and productivity. Long-term employment also provides benefits, such as three additional days for those with over 10 years of continuous service with the same employer.

In Italy, the law guarantees a minimum of four weeks of paid annual leave, which equates to 20 working days for a five-day work week. However, national collective agreements often provide more favorable terms, frequently resulting in 26 to 28 working days depending on the specific sector and profession.
