Silesia 2028 to feature record 3.5 million euro prize fund

European Athletics has announced a record-breaking prize fund of 3.5 million euros for the 2028 European Athletics Championships, to be held in Chorzów, Silesia, Poland. This marks a significant shift in how athletes are rewarded compared to previous years.

Under the new structure, prize money will be distributed to all athletes finishing in the top eight positions across all 50 scheduled events. Gold medalists in individual events will receive 30,000 euros, silver medalists 15,000 euros, and bronze medalists 10,000 euros. The remaining positions will receive tiered payouts: 5,000 euros for 4th place, 4,000 for 5th, 3,000 for 6th, 2,000 for 7th, and 1,000 for 8th. In relay events, the prize will be shared among team members.

This decision aims to provide more consistent financial recognition and attract top-tier talent, addressing previous concerns regarding athlete attendance at major championships. European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov noted that the investment adds prestige to the event, which will take place from June 3 to June 8, 2028, shortly before the Los Angeles Olympics.
