European authorities tighten zoo regulations and animal welfare standards

Authorities in the Netherlands and Belgium are implementing stricter measures and enforcement actions regarding zoo operations and animal welfare.

In the Netherlands, State Secretary Silvio Erkens has proposed a new vision to overhaul the zoo system. The plan aims to move away from indefinite permits, instead requiring continuous assessment to ensure standards are met. The government intends to reward zoos that innovate while penalizing those that fall behind, potentially using fines or permit revocations. The proposal also explores restricting direct contact between visitors and animals, such as feeding or touching, to improve welfare.

In Belgium, Minister Ben Weyts has ordered the closure of sixteen enclosures at Pakawi Park in Olmen due to serious and persistent issues regarding animal welfare and safety. Following a lengthy procedure, officials identified inadequate barriers between the public and dangerous animals, hygiene concerns, poor food supply, and insufficient enclosure sizes or climate controls. As a result, five enclosures have had their recognition suspended, and eleven others have had their permits revoked.
