European automakers leverage heritage to counter Chinese EV competition

European car manufacturers are increasingly utilizing brand heritage and nostalgia to compete with the rapid expansion of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers. As Chinese brands like BYD and Geely capture significant market share through lower costs and advanced technology, established companies are reviving iconic classic models to differentiate themselves and evoke emotional connections with buyers.

At the Paris Autoshow, companies showcased this strategy: Renault is seeing success with an electric version of the Renault 5, while Stellantis unveiled an electric Citroen 2CV and Volkswagen is drawing inspiration from the classic Golf for its electric Polo.

This shift occurs amid a broader structural transformation in the industry. The value proposition in automotive manufacturing is moving from traditional mechanical components toward software and battery technology. While European manufacturers face intense pressure to close the technology gap, they are also exploring strategic partnerships and joint ventures with Chinese firms to better understand and integrate competitive technological advantages.
