European automotive suppliers face job cuts amid electric transition

European automotive suppliers reported 18,900 job cuts in the first half of 2026, a 35% decrease compared to the 29,250 losses recorded in the second half of 2025. Despite this moderation, the sector has experienced three consecutive years of significant workforce reductions, according to the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA).

Approximately 66% of the new job cuts announced between January and June were linked to electromobility, reflecting a shift in production networks and investment toward electric technologies. While 5,440 new positions were created during this period—the highest semi-annual figure since late 2023—the number of new roles remains below the number of positions eliminated.

In Spain, the CSIF union is demanding wage increases for workers in the automotive manufacturing and component sectors in Castilla y León to combat the loss of purchasing power. Union representatives from companies including Michelin, Renault, Horse, Mobility OP, Ficosa, and Grupo Logístico Sesé have called for a just technological transition to protect regional industrial activity.

Concurrently, imports of automotive components from China reached 5 billion euros in the first half of 2026, representing a 23% increase from the same period the previous year.
