European automakers pivot to defense industry amid production crisis

European automakers are increasingly pivoting toward the defense industry to combat declining production, intense Chinese competition, and underutilized factory capacity. As European nations increase defense spending, automotive companies are viewing military manufacturing as a strategic way to sustain factories and supply chains.

In the United Kingdom, Ford is seeking to utilize its Dagenham plant by joining a consortium with General Dynamics and Ricardo to bid for a British Ministry of Defence contract for approximately 9,000 light military vehicles. Jaguar Land Rover is also competing for this same contract and has established a specialized unit to support international military market activities.

Other major manufacturers are pursuing similar shifts. France’s Renault has entered a strategic agreement with Thales to produce military drones, aiming for a capacity of up to 1,000 units per month. In Germany, Volkswagen has agreed to sell an unused factory in Osnabrück, which is expected to be converted into a military production hub through a joint venture with an Israeli defense industry investor.
