European basketball faces fragmentation and integrity concerns

European basketball is navigating a period of significant structural and ethical challenges. Former Euroleague CEO Jordi Bertomeu has cautioned clubs against surrendering control to the NBA as the league prepares to launch NBA Europe in October 2027. While both the NBA and Euroleague express openness to collaboration, Bertomeu noted that current proposals do not represent a true partnership, and Euroleague shareholders recently rejected an NBA offer.

Simultaneously, the sport is facing an integrity crisis. A major corruption investigation in Greece has led to the arrest of six individuals, including the federation president and refereeing officials. Authorities are investigating allegations of bribery and match manipulation involving approximately 50 games played between 2016 and 2026. This follows a broader pattern of match-fixing and illegal betting scandals across Europe, raising questions about the ability of basketball institutions to protect the game's credibility.
