Europe's Battery Storage Tops 100 GWh, Enough for 75 Million Homes
In 2025 Europe installed about 36 GWh of new battery energy storage systems, bringing total operational capacity above 100 GWh for the first time. Industry association SolarPower Europe says this capacity can supply electricity to roughly 75 million households and helps integrate renewable energy, strengthen energy security and improve grid resilience.
The rapid expansion has sparked debate over grid stability. The UK newspaper The Telegraph warned that Britain’s battery boom “risks overwhelming the grid,” echoing concerns from the Panel of Technical Experts about potential blackouts if storage systems are not managed properly.
Switzerland’s residential battery market is also booming. Around half of new photovoltaic installations are now paired with storage, and the average installed battery price fell to about CHF 800 per kWh by late 2024. However, analysts note that a typical 10 kWh home system may take well over a decade to recoup its costs, especially given high installation and administrative expenses.
