European biogas and biomethane sectors expand through new technologies and support systems

The European biogas and biomethane sectors are experiencing growth driven by technological advancements and new government support mechanisms. In the Czech Republic, a newly launched auction-based operational support system for biomethane production has seen demand significantly exceed available volumes. The country aims to increase its biomethane production to 500 million cubic meters annually by 2030, a goal supported by the new system which is expected to boost production by nearly twentyfold.

In Poland, the transition toward decarbonization is driving interest in waste-to-energy and biomass technologies. As a country still heavily reliant on coal, Poland is investing in new infrastructure, such as the Clean Energy Port in Gdańsk, which focuses on thermal waste processing for electricity and heat. Industry experts suggest that international exhibitions like Ecomondo 2026 in Rimini will serve as critical platforms for Polish companies to access mature industrial models and international expertise in anaerobic digestion and organic waste recovery.
