European Biogas Industry Urges Stronger Government Support
The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) welcomed the NESO report that projects the UK could generate up to 30 TWh of biomethane per year by 2050 – five times current output – and highlights a feedstock potential of 108 TWh. The report warns that without a successor to the Green Gas Support Scheme, growth may stall. ADBA chair Chris Huhne called for a clear production ambition, inclusion of grid‑injected biomethane in the UK ETS, and a new funding framework.
At the European level, the European Biogas Association (EBA) released a study on digestate, the nutrient‑rich co‑product of anaerobic digestion, positioning it as a strategic input for the EU Fertiliser Action Plan. The report notes that digestate can help reduce reliance on imported mineral fertilisers, improve soil health, and provide a circular nutrient source, with European AD plants already producing around 25 million tonnes of digestate. Both reports stress the need for policy measures to unlock the sector’s potential and support the transition to a low‑carbon, circular economy.
