European biotechnology sector faces structural funding and innovation gaps
The European biotechnology sector faces significant structural challenges, according to a report by ESMT Berlin. The report highlights a critical window for Germany and Europe to address a growing gap in innovation, talent, and capital. Approximately 70 percent of surveyed founders, investors, and scientists described the situation as urgent, with 74 percent of sentiment being negative.
Key issues include the ‘Valleys of Death’ in the innovation chain. The first involves difficulties in translating scientific discoveries into viable companies due to ineffective technology transfer offices. The second involves a massive funding gap; European venture capital funds account for only about 7 percent of the global life sciences market, compared to 63 percent held by US-based funds.
In specific corporate developments, BioNTech has faced setbacks in its transition toward oncology. The company recently had to end its Phase 2 study, BNT122-01, after a monitoring committee identified a numerical imbalance in overall survival, though no new safety signals were reported. This occurs as BioNTech navigates declining revenues and a downward revision of its annual sales forecast to between 1.6 and 1.9 billion euros.
