European bison populations expand through UK reintroduction and Polish conservation

The European bison, the continent's largest land mammal, is seeing a resurgence in various parts of Europe. In the United Kingdom, reintroduction efforts have been successful; a first herd was established in Kent in 2022, and a second herd has begun living freely in protected areas in Cumbria as of 2026. These projects aim to rebuild diverse habitats and support the restoration of other species.

In Poland, the bison population remains significant, with the country holding record numbers exceeding 3,000 individuals. In the Bieszczady Mountains, the high density of the population increases the likelihood of encounters between tourists and bison during the summer season.

Authorities, including the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Rzeszów, advise caution when encountering these animals. While bison typically avoid human contact, they can reach speeds of 60 km/h and weigh up to 900 kg, potentially reacting defensively if their safety zone is breached.
