European Broadcasting Union issues new guidelines to curb sexualized camera angles in women's athletics

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), together with European Athletics, has published a 23‑page guide titled “Raising the Bar” to stop the sexualisation of female athletes in track‑and‑field broadcasts. The document bans low‑angle shots, close‑ups of the lower body and unnecessary slow‑motion replays, urging broadcasters to use wider, performance‑focused angles. It was drafted with input from elite athletes Holly Bradshaw, Ivana Španović and Blanka Vlašić. EBU Sport executive Glen Killane said the "sexualisation of women athletes through selective camera angles and editing choices" is a significant concern. Bradshaw warned that intrusive camera work has led to online abuse, while Španović said such angles cause discomfort and distraction. The guidelines have sparked mixed reactions: some viewers criticize the rules as limiting the spectacle, while others welcome the focus on athletic talent. Broadcasters across Europe are now expected to adopt the recommendations for upcoming events, including the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The initiative reflects growing scrutiny of gender bias in sports media and aims to shift coverage toward athletes’ skill rather than appearance.
