The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has announced significant rule changes for the Eurovision Song Contest. Under the new regulations, a winning broadcaster will be ineligible to host if an “armed conflict, a sensitive geopolitical situation, or any other situation materially affects the security, safety or stability of their state or immediate region.” The EBU may commission independent security assessments to determine hosting viability, potentially appointing an alternative broadcaster if necessary.

Additional updates include raising the minimum age for performers from 16 to 18 years to better protect young artists from competition pressures. The rules also specify that lead vocals must be performed live, prohibiting the use of pre-recorded voices to support the main melody.

Following the victory of Bulgarian singer Dara in 2026, the city of Burgas has been officially selected to host the 71st Eurovision Song Contest from May 11 to May 15, 2027. The event will be held at the Burgas Arena. The announcement has already triggered significant interest in the region, with reports of rapid accommodation bookings and sharp increases in local lodging prices.
