European camper van demand and rental car pitfalls shape traveler choices
A market analysis by the rental portal CamperDays shows that two types of motorhomes dominate Europe’s holiday vehicle market. In Norway, Spain and Poland, part‑integrated motorhomes are most frequently booked, while campervans lead in Portugal, Austria, Ireland, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and France. Both vehicle classes can be driven with a standard B‑category car licence as long as the total weight stays below 3.5 tonnes.
Separately, the Austrian automobile club ÖAMTC warns travelers in Italy and Spain to avoid costly mistakes when renting cars. It advises checking insurance coverage, flexible cancellation terms and mandatory equipment such as child seats before booking. Renters should document any pre‑existing damage, respect pick‑up and drop‑off times, and promptly inform the rental company of flight delays. The club also stresses reading contracts carefully and not signing any admission of fault without full understanding.
