Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Phocas and Saint Cosmas on September 22

The Orthodox Church commemorates several saints on September 22, most notably Saint Phocas, the Hieromartyr and Wonderworker, and Saint Cosmas of Zografou.

Saint Phocas, originally from Sinope in the Euxine Pontus, served as the Bishop of Sinope. Known for his missionary work and miracles, he was martyred during the reign of Emperor Trajan after being ordered by the Prefect Africanus to be cast into a hot bath. Due to his father's profession as a shipbuilder and his own miracles involving maritime safety, he is venerated as a patron of sailors.

Saint Cosmas of Zografou, an ascetic from a Bulgarian aristocratic family, sought a monastic life at Mount Athos. He resided at the Zografou Monastery and was known for his spiritual gifts, including visions and prophecy. He passed away peacefully in 1323.

Other names celebrated on this day include Zografia, Louiza, Loizos, Phokios, Phokis, Phokia, and Phokina.
