European Central Bank balance sheet falls to 5,948 billion euros
The European Central Bank (ECB) has significantly reduced the size of its consolidated Eurosystem balance sheet. As of October 2, 2026, the balance sheet stood at approximately 5,948 billion euros.
This represents a contraction of roughly 2,888 billion euros, or about 32.7%, from its historical peak of 8,836 billion euros in June 2022. This reduction follows years of exceptional monetary policies and reflects a gradual withdrawal of liquidity from the financial system. This normalization of monetary policy may provide the ECB with greater latitude to intervene during future financial crises.
