Romania monetary indicators show decline in non-governmental credit

Data from the National Bank of Romania indicates a decline in non-governmental credit for July 2026. The balance of loans granted to the population and companies fell by 0.3% compared to June, reaching 472.42 billion lei. In real terms, adjusted for inflation, this decrease was 0.8%.

While non-governmental credit saw a monthly decline, government credit increased by 2.4% in July, reaching 286.15 billion lei. The broad money supply (M3) rose by 0.7% to 809.29 billion lei.

On a broader fiscal scale, Romania faces significant debt obligations. Public debt has reached 61.4% of GDP, totaling over 1,194 billion lei. Between 2027 and 2030, the state is required to refinance approximately 84 billion euros in principal, a process that involves issuing new debt to repay old obligations.
